February newsletter

Hello All
So finally here’s my first art newsletter of 2023!

Christmas Holidays 2022
It’s been wonderful to get back to painting in my Salt River studio after a lovely lazy and revitalizing family holiday in Kleinbaai and Betty’s Bay over December and early January. I kept the art thread going by painting and collaging in old FT magazines and notebook doodling on walks to the lighthouse along the Cape coast.

Painting Sales
Art sales got off to a promising start with exciting developments at Graham Contemporary Gallery in Joburg. A large number of my large-scale abstract paintings were sold to a mysterious international client (with bodyguards!) in January.

Shortly after, Kalk Bay Modern in Cape Town sold a couple more large paintings to overseas visitors. This is always so encouraging and gets me even more fired up and productive. (after a rather slow few months late last year – but such is the artist life!)

In the Studio
I’m currently working on some new large scale abstracts and drawing on memories of my childhood garden. It was a grand playground of curious shapes, textures, colours, scents and tastes. I spent a lot of time daydreaming under the willow tree, climbing trees picking plums and pretending to be a showjumping horse flying over granadilla and lavender hedges! In many ways my studio has replaced the garden and has become the container for new playful encounters and experiments.

Available Work
New are 4 artist prints. To see these and works on canvas available to purchase in my studio and in galleries have a look here Available Work

Painting Workshops
I've been compiling some exciting new teaching material and am looking forward to working with and supporting other creatives.
I'm offering the following new Painting Workshops at my studio in Salt River:

  • 4-day Painting Workshop | Mud & Gold: Deepening your Painting Practice 18 – 21 April | 9.30am – 3.30pm
My workshops aim to offer the beginner and the more advanced artist unconventional ways of approaching painting through simple exercises all in the spirit of adventure and discovery. We will approach painting from an place of abstraction but you are not limited to this genre and can move freely towards the figurative. Artclub Show & Tell is a quarterly Saturday morning gathering where artists and civilians can share their work. It will take the form of a ‘show and tell’ session with a relaxed and encouraging discussion of the artworks. This is an opportunity to get a response to your artwork from the group. And an opportunity for the group to challenge and grow their own ideas of aesthetic appreciation.

  • Artclub Show & Tell Sidetrack Studios Saturday 6 May | 9.30am – 12pm

All are welcome! Artists and civilians. This is a free event. Please rsvp to attend. Email me at maryvisser2012@gmail.com
