My aim as facilitator is to assist you in embracing and growing your unique sensibilities as an artist and to enable you to get unstuck and move forward in the painting process through simple prompts and exercises.

Working on many surfaces and without preciousness, you’ll make decisions in the moment and learn to manage your internal critic. The goal is to introduce ideas on how to approach painting with a sense of liberation as well as sharing with you some key design tools. By maintaining a balance between freedom and control, chance and intention we hope to expand the possibilities of what painting can be.

These workshops are suitable for beginners or more advanced artists.

In the 3-DAY PAINTING ESSENTIALS WORKSHOP we’ll explore unique and simple exercises in order to solve problems and move forward in your paintings. I’ll introduce you to some key design tools and we’ll look at how to implement them in your paintings. We’ll work on many surfaces (paper, boards and canvas) and in series. You’ll have ample time to work on your own with me on hand when you need guidance. Bring along any additional unfinished paintings you might have that you’d like to resolve.

In IMAGE/ABSTRACT we'll collect appealing images from magazines and work with these to trigger new colour and form arrangements. We’ll paint on paper and a selection of smaller boards as well as 1 larger canvas.

In LANDSCAPE/ABSTRACT we’ll begin with collecting observational sketches from a walking meditation. Then develop these notes through colour exercises into abstracted compositions. We’ll paint on paper and a selection of smaller boards as well as 1 larger canvas.

My approach to painting has developed out of my own personal journey as an artist over the past 30 years. I have been a painter of urban landscapes, harbours and airports and have slowly moved towards abstraction. When working in abstraction and I am free from the constraints of reproducing the way the object or landscape might look in a photograph, painting becomes a limitless arena for expression. I have developed various simple and playful exercises to help me through this process which otherwise can be more frustrating and confusing than fun. I have found working in abstraction brings with it self-discovery, exhilaration and moments intense joy. I wish to share my approach to painting and support other artists in finding joy in their own art journey.
